A two-day nationally recognised Outdoor Pursuits First Aid course that meets Band 3 & 4 of the Institute for Outdoor Learning’s first aid guidance. Completing this training successfully validates the following National Governing Body Awards:

Mountain Training – All Awards

British Cycling – MTB Leader

Additionally completing this training successfully fulfils the requirements of the following Awarding Body for their Awards:

British Canoeing – All Awards

Course syllabus

The following subjects are taught:

  • Roles and responsibilities for first aid Incident management
  • First aid equipment and record keeping
  • Calling for appropriate help/rescue service
  • ABCD primary survey
  • Treatments for unconscious/not breathing casualty to include Recovery Position / CPR AED
  • Choking Mild & Severe
  • Treatments for bleeding/shock
  • Recognition and management of life threatening illness
  • Recognition and treatments for medical conditions, Asthma, Diabetes, Severe Allergies,
  • Recognition and management of drowning/cold water shock
  • Treatment of minor injuries, e.g. small cuts, bruises, etc.
  • Heat related injury
  • Age awareness for vital signs
  • Secondary survey
  • Trauma injury
  • Poisons, burns Hypo/hyperthermia, dehydration
  • Casualty in variety of positions/situations Stabilising/insulating/monitoring
  • Management of casualty/basic monitoring

Certificates that are issued are valid for three-years. It is recommended that all certificate holders attend a three-hour annual refresher course in between renewal training.

Assessment

Students are assessed by means of oral and written questioning alongside practical demonstrations. Outcome’s will be refer, pass or fail.
