First Aid at Work Training – Equestrian Sector

The 3-day First aid at work training course for the Equestrian sector meets the Health & Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981. It also meets the required BHS standards for equestrian centres and for those teaching riding or other activities where staff are required to hold a BHS qualification or a First Aid at Work certificate such as this.

Topics covered

The 3-day first aid at work training covers knowledge such as the roles and responsibilities of the first aider within an equine environment, how to assess an incident and recognising signs and symptoms of injury and illness in the workplace. The qualification also covers first aid skills in CPR and use of an AED and assisting a casualty who is suffering from major injury and illness such as chest injuries, spinal injuries and anaphylaxis. Additional subjects taught are the use of Tourniquets and Haemostatic dressings.

Assessment method

This 3-day equestrian first aid at work qualification is assessed by practical demonstrations alongside oral and written questioning.

Students successfully completing this 3-day first aid at work training will be awarded a ProTrainings Equestrian  Level 3 First Aid at Work (VTQ) certificate that is valid for 3-years.

Under the current guidelines it is ”strongly recommended” that first aid trained staff attend a half-day first aid refresher course every 12 months – before attending their 2-day re-qualification course at the three year point.
